Description
This is a so called armillary sphere. I found it somewhere in the Vatican Museums. The warm roman sun of a bright cloudless afternoon was shining through a near window and shed light on this wonderful piece of ancient machinery.
An armillary sphere, simply put a model of the celestial sphere, was used to measure coordinates in the sky and the movement of celestial bodies for any geographic location and any time. The designation origins from the latin words armillaris=ring and sphaera=sphere.
In German this device was also known as Weltmaschine, a world-machine, which sound kind of awesome, doens't it? ^^
